New Contract Faculty Orientation

Welcome to Durham College and to your role as a new faculty member.   We have organized a three-day orientation program to help you to get off to a great start.  This two-part orientation has been designed to introduce you to the College, our academic expectations, policies, and information sources.   You will have an opportunity to meet key College resource employees who will be able to assist you.   In addition, you will be introduced to WebCT Vista, our course management system, and collaborate with other new faculty members to explore curriculum topics, teaching and learning strategies and ways to effectively assess your students' learning.

Part 1 - Orientation       

Orientation Outcomes

Upon completion of orientation, participants will have had opportunities to develop the ability to:

- complete processes and procedures associated with their role as a new faculty member at Durham College;
- locate resources and information contained in the Faculty Handbook, Program Guides, Curriculum Guide  and other print/online resources;
- recognize the importance of planning lessons that align with course outlines;
- identify means of communicating electronically with students using both MyCampus and WebCT Vista;
- recognize the commitment to academic excellence at Durham College, and opportunities for continued professional development;
- identify resources, policies, and procedures associated with classroom management issues;
- list strategies for setting a climate for learning in their classes; and
- locate and identify campus resources for both students and faculty.

Important Note: Parking is FREE in Founder's Lot 3, Oshawa Campus.

Part 2 - JumpStart Program   

JumpStart Program Outcomes

At the completion of this two-day program, faculty will have had opportunities to:

- increase their understanding of curriculum and its meaning to their courses;
- learn a variety of new teaching methods;
- develop appropriate evaluation tools;
- master foundational WebCT Vista skills; and
- enhance their value to Durham College.

Important Note: Parking is FREE during weekends, Oshawa Campus.
