Session One: Teaching and Learning: Understanding Curriculum
Whether you teach a fixed curriculum designed by a full-time faculty member, or are creating a credit or non-credit course yourself, this session will help you to be able to:
- recognize the role of course learning outcomes in the curriculum design process; |
- write learning outcomes that accurately articulate required knowledge, skills, and attitudes; |
- recognize the relationship among teaching methods, evaluation strategies, and learning outcomes; and |
- design a sequence of instruction that supports the achievement of learning outcomes. |
Session Two: Teaching and Learning: Selecting Teaching/Learning Methods
This session will build on session one in assisting you to deliberately select and implement a variety of teaching/learning methods to support your students’ success. As well, the session will include a lesson-planning template that addresses the diversity of student learning styles. By the end of the session, you will be able to:
- select active learning strategies to support student learning; |
- plan lessons that address student learning styles and provide repetition and practice; and |
- select formative feedback activities to integrate into lessons. |
Session Three: Teaching with Technology: Introduction to WebCT Vista (including Grades Submission)
This highly interactive session will focus on the basics of WebCT Vista, our online course management system used at DC/UOIT. The session will provide opportunities to build the following skills, using your own course outline (please bring a current copy, if available). Some discussion will occur regarding the variety of tools offered in WebCT Vista, time permitting. The use of interactive learning objects and other possibilities will also be demonstrated.
- build your course web site, including logging in, customizing your homepage, adding files, content links, and course syllabus; |
- set-up and use GradeBook and e-mark submission via WebCT Vista; and |
- select assessment and assignment tools from WebCT Vista for possible integration into your current teaching methodology. |
Session Four: Teaching and Learning: Assessing Learning
In this session, the principles learned in sessions one and two will be applied to the design of appropriate evaluation tools. By the end of the session, you’ll be able to:
- select appropriate evaluation strategies to assess student learning; |
- create rubrics for the evaluation of student assignments; and |
- implement best practices for the creation of multiple choice test items. |
